Our literacy program is designed to not only develop our scholars as strong readers and writers, but also instill a love for reading that will enable our scholars to become lifelong learners and teach themselves anything.
We follow an inquiry-based model of learning, where scholars are given unique problems, and the time and encouragement to solve those problems through a variety of strategies. This approach inspires a deep understanding of math, as well as prepares our scholars to be flexible and innovative thinkers.
Starting in Kindergarten, all scholars participate in discovery-based science class every day taught by a dedicated science teacher. Scholars engage in hands-on labs and activities, through which they develop a curiosity about the world around them and begin to answer the question “why are things the way they are and not otherwise?”
Andrew Foglia
Founder & Executive Director
Andrew Foglia is the Founder and Executive Director of BOLD Charter School. Mr. Foglia’s commitment to educational equity began during his tenure with Teach For America, during which he taught middle school math and science in Newark, NJ. After Teach For America, Mr. Foglia joined Success Academy Charter Schools, one of the highest-performing charter school networks across the country, where he was both a teacher and school leader. Mr. Foglia is dedicated to increasing access to world-class schools for all children, and leads BOLD in service of that mission. Mr. Foglia earned a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University and a Masters in Education from Harvard University.

BOLD is a public school committed to providing a world-class education to all children living in New York City, including children with specific learning or language needs. Should we receive more applications than available seats, we will hold a random lottery. Beginning with the 2020-21 school year, we will offer a preference in the lottery for siblings of scholars that are already enrolled at BOLD.
Leanna Dunsmore
Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Leanna Dunsmore is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at BOLD Charter School. Ms. Dunsmore’s passion for teaching began at Success Academy Charter Schools, where she spent several years as the Special Education teacher in an ICT classroom before transitioning into an Instructional Coach role at Harlem Village Academies. Through Ms. Dunsmore’s experience of upholding high academic expectations while adapting instruction to meet the unique needs of every student, she determined that when provided with individualized supports, all children can and will succeed. Ms. Dunsmore is thrilled to join a team of educators who are committed to excellence and believe all children are capable of greatness. Ms. Dunsmore earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bucknell University and a Masters in Childhood Education and Special Education from Touro College Graduate School of Education.
